Safely Enjoy Your Watercraft With These Tips

Watercraft Safety

Heading out on the water on your personal watercraft is the best way to take full advantage of summer. Before you buckle up your life jacket, you should take the time to make sure that you know how to stay safe while on the water. Keep these watercraft safety tips in mind so that you can fully enjoy the season.

  • Stay away from other vessels, shorelines, and rocky areas while on the water. Give any vessels that are towing skiers, wakeboarders, or tubers enough room on all sides in case the rider falls.
  • Learn what all navigational signs and markers mean in the water, and always follow the signs to stay safe.
  • Never operate a watercraft if you have ingested any alcohol or drugs. Driving on the water can be just as dangerous as drinking and driving.
  • Do not carry any more passengers that the watercraft is rated for to ensure that everyone is able to stay safe.
  • Before you head out on the water, check to make sure that the engine is running properly. If you find any issues, get them fixed before you head out.
  • Large vessels, sailboats that are under sail, and paddle crafts should always get priority while on the water.
  • If you are heading head on with another watercraft, steer to the right to pass, just like you would in a car.
  • When you are overtaking another vessel from behind, pass on either side but make sure that you have plenty of room.
  • Constantly scan the water while you are driving to help avoid any collisions with other watercrafts.

Most importantly, make sure that you have the right amount of watercraft insurance to stay safe. Contact Gant Insurance Agency in McKinney, Texas for all of your watercraft insurance coverage needs this summer.
