According to Reuters, the Texas state fire marshal confirmed the findings of state fire investigators and federal ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms,) investigators who combed the scene of the fertilizer plant explosion on April 17, 2013 in the tiny town of West, Texas. The cause of the fire and explosion was ammonium nitrate. The blast injured 200 people, killed 14, including several volunteer first responders and firefighters.
The explosion severely damaged an apartment building, schools, homes and businesses, and forced residents in the area around the plant to leave their homes for several days. Authorities estimate that the total cost of damage to all of the affected property will be around $100 million. Investigators are continuing to comb the more than12,000 square foot building that was owned by Adair Grain to determine exactly where the explosion occurred.
Seven lawsuits totaling millions of dollars in claims have been filed so far. The plaintiffs allege that employees of the plant were negligent.
