5 Steps You Should Take If Someone Hits Your Parked Car

  • auto insurance

Not every accident happens on the road. Sometimes, your car may get damaged in a parking lot or when parked on the street. What should you do when someone hits your parked car? Following these simple steps will help you take immediate action and also understand whether you can claim your car insurance for such damage or loss.

1. Collect the Driver’s Information

If you find your parked car hit by someone, ask the driver to explain how the accident happened. Also, collect their important details like name, address, insurance details, and contact number. Also, note down the make and model of the car and license number. If you can’t find the driver, check whether they have left any note with their contact details.

If the driver has left the spot without leaving a note, look around for witnesses. This will help you get any details about the accident or driver.

2. Take Photographs of the Damage

Take close-ups of all damaged areas of both vehicles. In case if any street light or a business sign is damaged, take photographs of that too.

3. Inform the Police

Contact the police and file a report. Getting the police involved can also help identify the offender and access any security camera that may have captured the accident.

4. Inform Your Insurance Agent

The driver at fault should cover the cost of damage to your vehicle, either through their insurance or out of pocket. However, you need to inform your insurance agent, as they can guide you throughout the process.

5. Understand Your Car Insurance Policy

You might have many questions like whether you can file the claim, how much costs can be covered by your insurance, and within what time you need to file the claim. The answers to all these questions depend on the type of policy you have. For example, uninsured motorist coverage and collision coverage cover such incidents. However, you need to contact your insurance agent as quickly as possible.

While buying insurance, be sure to explore coverage plans for parked car hits. If you have any questions about comprehensive car insurance, contact the experts at Gant Insurance Agency in McKinney, Texas. We are happy to answer any insurance questions you may have.
