When disaster strikes your home, you need to take certain steps to properly file a homeowners insurance claim to ensure you become compensated. If you incorrectly file a claim, the insurance company may deny it or it will take longer for the claim to be processed. Here are the steps you can take to file a claim with your insurance company.
1) Contact the Police – For damages or losses caused by burglary or theft, you should contact your local authorities immediately to file a report in an effort to reclaim your possessions.
2) Collect the Information to File a Claim – Your insurance company will need certain information from you to process the claim. Information to provide includes: your policy number, any police reports, the name of the police department you contacted and the type of damage to your home. You will also need to provide the date, time and location of the damage.
3) Take Inventory of Your Home – If it is safe to be inside of the house, take inventory of your possessions to see what was damaged or stolen. Take pictures of damaged items but do not throw them away until after the claim is processed in case the insurance company wants to see the items.
4) Keep all receipts – If you had to vacate your home because it was unsafe to live in, then you need to keep all meal, temporary housing and transportation receipts. Also keep all receipts for repairs you had done to the home to be compensated.
