Spring Storm Safety Tips
While spring is supposed to bring warmer temperatures with days filled with sunshine, it can also bring severe spring storms that can lead to even more serious damage, which has been proven by the recent flooding throughout the state. To keep you and your family safe when the rain clouds start collecting, keep these spring storm tips in mind.
- Thunderstorms – when conditions are right for a severe thunderstorm, the National Weather Service will issue a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. These storms can lead to high winds, hail, lightning, and tornadoes! If you are in an area that is prone to thunderstorms, make sure that you keep up to date with the latest weather information to be better prepared. Even if a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is not issued, you should try to limit your outside activities if you hear thunder or see lightening. If you are indoors, try to avoid taking a bath or shower, and unplug any appliances that you do not need, such as computers, TVs and power tools.
- Tornadoes – the average wind speed of tornadoes is 112 miles per hour, but the winds can reach speeds of up to 300 miles per hour. While tornado warning alarms can alert you to a problem, they may only give you a few seconds to take cover. If you are outside, find shelter immediately, and stay put until all signs of danger has clearly passed.
If you find yourself in a mobile home when a disaster is approaching, get out as soon as possible. Even mobile homes that are tied down can be easily blown away. Never take shelter under a mobile home. Instead, make your way to the nearest shelter.
