Tips for Homeowners: Maintaining Proper Humidity Levels

  • September 17, 2014
  • News & Updates

As a homeowner, it is important that you maintain a proper level of humidity in your home to avoid dangerous exposures. We all need a little moisture in our lives, but too much can be detrimental. Depending on the particular preference of every member of your family, standard humidity levels range between 35% and 45%. In determining the accurate level of humidity in your home, you must also consider how it will affect your furniture, instruments, drywall, etc.

When there is excess moisture in your home, you will be able to see signs in the corners of your home and any enclosed areas. You know the mildew accumulation that can be seen in the corners of the walls of your bathrooms? That is the effect of excess moisture accumulation. This breeding ground for bacteria proves to not only be dangerous for our health, but dangerous on our furniture and wood pieces as well.

Depending on the particular season in which you are trying to remove excess moisture in your home, you have a variety of options to choose from. During the winter, you can best remove excess moisture by simply heating your basement to balance out humidity levels. If you have an extreme case of excess humidity, you may need to combine both heat and a dehumidifier for desired results.

If you will be using your heating system during the fall and winter seasons, your home would best benefit from the help of a humidifier. A humidifier can make rooms more comfortable and increase moisture. A dehumidifier yields the exact opposite results, taking out unnecessary moisture.
