Getting your first job is exciting and fulfilling. However, many new hires fail to examine their insurance options to ensure protection in the case of illness or disability. Take a moment to review your existing insurance benefits and add additional policies if needed.
Health Insurance
Investigate the health insurance coverage offered by your employer and sign up as soon as you are eligible. If your employer doesn’t offer coverage, an independent insurance agent can help you find private coverage or help navigate the federal insurance marketplace.
Life Insurance
Life insurance policies cover costs associated to bury you and pay off remaining debts after your death. If you have student loans that someone cosigned, your life insurance policy should be large enough to pay them off. You’ll also need to pay off all other debts such as mortgages, credit cards and leave enough to care for your dependants.
Disability Insurance
Long term disability insurance is a safety net which pays your income if you are unable to work. Review your employer’s policy to ensure it covers at least 50 percent of your income, has no annual caps and offers benefits for partial disability. If the employer doesn’t offer disability coverage purchase a private policy.
