How You Can Attempt to Go Zero-Waste at Home

  • January 23, 2020

Reduce the amount of waste your household produces.

As the state of the environment continues to worsen, it is all of our responsibility to step up and make meaningful changes to our lifestyles.  One way that you can help the environment is by trying to make your household zero-waste.  But what is zero-waste, and how can you achieve it?  Here’s what you need to know.

Zero-Waste

Zero-waste is a movement that challenges us to minimize the amount of waste that we produce.  To cut down on our waste production, we need to rethink what we buy and how we use things.  While this seems like a major lifestyle change, it’s important to understand that the zero-waste movement doesn’t mean eliminating all household waste completely.  Instead, it’s about becoming conscious of the amount of unnecessary waste that you produce and finding creative solutions to address it.

Tips for Going Zero-Waste

As a homeowner, there are many things that you can do to reduce the amount of waste that your household produces.  For instance, you can try out the following suggestions:

  • Stop Buying Packaged Foods– When you buy packaged foods, they typically come wrapped and portioned in nonrecyclable plastic waste. For instance, things like chip bags, K-cups, cereal bags, and granola bar wrappers are made of mixed plastics that can only be disposed of in a landfill.  To eliminate this major source of household waste, you should do your best to stop buying pre-packaged foods.  You can accomplish this by cooking at home with fresh fruits and vegetables.  Additionally, by buying packed foods in bulk, you can avoid having to buy smaller packages more frequently.  This will also help you cut down on the amount of nonrecyclable plastic waste that your household produces.
  • Make Your Own Cleaning Solutions– When you buy household cleaners, you are damaging the environment in several ways. To start, premade cleaning solutions are filled with chemicals that can be harmful to the environment.  Additionally, store-bought cleaners are packaged in plastic containers that add to the amount of waste that your household produces.  An easy way to reduce your impact on the planet is by making your own household cleaners.  There are many all-natural recipes that can be made with ingredients that you already have in your home.  By storing your homemade cleaners in reusable bottles, you can also eliminate this form of plastic waste.
  • Use Reusable Storage Options– Many households store leftover food items in disposable zip-lock bags, single-use plastic containers, tin foil, plastic wrap, and so on. Because these storage solutions cannot be reused or recycled, they are a major source of household waste.  Fortunately, there are new solutions that can eliminate this waste.  For instance, many manufacturers now make washable, reusable zip-lock bags.  Additionally, you can store food in Tupperware containers, air-tight jars, and other reusable options.

These are some of the things that you can do to make your home zero-waste.  Are you looking for assistance with your homeowners insurance?  If so, then contact the experts at Gant Insurance Agency.  We are ready to get you the coverage that you need today.
