Got a teen driver? Find out how crash worthy their car is..

A teen driver is always a concern for parents. Teenagers do not always follow all of the rules of the road or might not have the experience to react quickly in an unexpected driving situation. Parents should consider the safety features of a vehicle before allowing a teen driver to get out on his or her own.

Manufacturer Consideration

Before allowing a teen driver to enjoy driving alone, parents should find out the safety features a manufacturer provides in every standard vehicle. The standard safety features are an indication of the features provided on the vehicle.

Standard safety features a manufacturer might provide include airbags, anti-lock brakes, child safety locks and rearview cameras. Although every manufacturer will provide a certain number of airbags, some vehicles come with more than others. Anti-lock brakes are particularly useful for teen drivers because it will help reduce the risks during poor driving conditions. Although child safety locks and rear-facing cameras are useful, they might not be part of the standard features on the vehicle. Parents might need to consider adding further features to feel comfortable with the vehicle before a teen driver gets behind the wheel.

Type of Vehicle

The type of vehicle also plays a role in the safety features available. Safety requirements for small sports cars will always differ from the features available in a family minivan.

Even though parents should look into the number of airbags, standard safety features and crash safety of a car before allowing a teen driver to take over, it is particularly important to protect that young adult with insurance coverage. To find the best insurance coverage for a teen driver, contact Gant Insurance Agency.
