Truth Behind Bad Weather Driving Myths

Bad Weather Driving Myths

Driving in bad weather can be very nerve wracking. If you have been following one of the many bad weather driving myths, you may be making it even more difficult. Make sure you know the truth behind these bad weather driving myths to ensure that you stay safe on the road.

  1. Myth: Turn your high beams on in the fog. Even though it may seem like turning on your bright lights can help you see better through dense fog, it can actually make driving more difficult. Your bright lights will reflect off the fog and can be a distraction to other drivers. When you are driving through the fog, slow down and turn on your headlights, not your high beams.
  2. Myth: Cold weather will drain your battery. While it sounds like this could be true, heat will actually shorten the life of your battery. Freezing temperatures will affect the performance of your battery, but will be much less damaging than extreme heat. Check your battery every few months, and look for weak connections, corrosive build up, or frayed cables.
  3. Myth: Stay in your car if you see a tornado. This is the exact opposite of what you should do if you see a tornado in the distance. Tornados can quickly cause your car to flip over, even if you are parked under an overpass. If there is a sturdy shelter nearby, leave your car for the shelter. If there is no shelter nearby, climb down into a ditch to stay safe from flying debris.

Having the right auto insurance policy can help to ensure that you and your car are protected in case of any bad weather. Contact the insurance professionals at Gant Insurance Agency in McKinney, Texas for all of your auto insurance coverage needs.
