The winter holidays have ended, and it’s time to put away the trimmings. Whether you have treasures or an expanding holiday stash, packing and storing can be a hassle.
Here are five tips from Allstate to simplify the process.
Determine the best storage option. Consider a self-storage unit when there’s not enough room at home. For delicate ornaments, candles or electronics, rent a climate-controlled unit.
Pick the right container. Avoid cardboard boxes. They can cause damage from acid and moisture. Better choices are airtight plastic bins with acid-free tissue or bubble wrap to cushion fragile items.
Sort and organize. Divide ornaments by similarities like shape or color and include any hardware. Remove batteries from electronics to avoid corrosion.
Label everything. Zip-up bags are great for small items. Label them with a marker.
Special packing tips. Store wreaths in pizza boxes or suspend them, covered, on a wire hanger. Wrap lights around boxed items or garden hose reels. Ornaments fit nicely into egg cartons and wine boxes. Use disposable food storage containers for hardware and extra lights.
